Buffs open AAC schedule with split

ASHEVILLE, NC (March 3, 2007) --- The Milligan College baseball team started the 2007 Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) season with a split at Montreat (N.C.) College Saturday afternoon. Montreat took the first game with an 18-5 win, but the Buffaloes bounced back in the second game with a 4-3 victory.

With the results, both teams share a 1-1 AAC record while Milligan moves to 5-11 overall and Montreat is now 10-5.

Freshman right-handed pitcher Frank Newcomb (Knoxville, Tenn.) pitched his second complete game of the season in the nightcap. Newcomb allowed three runs, one earned, on six hits with four strikeouts on the mound.

Milligan came up with all four of their runs in the final two innings with a pair of two-run home runs. The first came from Clint Dorman (Savannah, Ga.) in the sixth followed by the game-winning shot from Baker DeCamp (Miami, Fla.) in the seventh inning. DeCamp also added another hit in the contest.

The first game saw the Buffs jump in front early on Montreat. Justin Sauceman (Alcoa, Tenn.) provided a two-run home run to give Milligan a 2-0 lead in the first inning. The Buffs would eventually lead 5-1 half way through the third inning.

Montreat capitalized on Milligan mistakes in the home half of the third inning. An 8-run inning gave the Cavs the lead.

Sauceman finished the game 3-for-4 with two more RBIs. Dorman and Garrett Reed (Gray, Tenn.) each added two hits and a run. Dorman also accounted for one RBI. Senior Ben Huff (Bristol, Tenn.) was 1-for-3, but his hit was a double.

Brett Seybert (Columbiana, Ohio) pitched two plus innings for the Buffs and gave up eight runs, but only two were earned. He gave up four hits and walked four with one strikeout.

Of Montreat’s 15 runs scored, only four were earned runs.

Milligan will travel to Brewton-Parker College for a four-game series. The Buffs and Barons will play a doubleheader on Tuesday and Wednesday in Mount Vernon, Ga. Both of the doubleheaders are scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
