MILLIGAN COLLEGE, TN (April 3, 2007) --- The
Milligan College baseball team swept a
doubleheader from Berry (Ga.) College on
Tuesday afternoon at Anglin Field behind
explosive offensive performances in both
games. The wins improve the Buffs’ record to
19-16 overall on the season. Milligan
remains 8-2 in the Appalachian Athletic
Conference (AAC).
Game1: Milligan 12 Berry 9
The Buffs jumped out to an early lead when
Garrett Reed (Gray, Tenn.) doubled
and then scored on a Clint Dorman
(Savannah, Ga.) single.
Milligan then added four more runs in the
fourth inning, which included a two-run
Danny Bacon (St. Petersburg, Fla.)
triple. Bacon then went on to score on a
single from Baker DeCamp (Miami,
Fla.)
Leading by a score of 5-4, Milligan saw its
lead disappear when Berry collected a run in
the fifth and then burst out for four runs
in the sixth frame. The Buffs responded with
three runs of their own in the bottom half
of the sixth, cutting the lead to one.
Trailing 9-8 going into the bottom of the
seventh inning, Ricky Morgan (Johnson
City, Tenn.) led off by grounding out to
third. Then, back to back hits by Spencer
Street (Jonesborough, Tenn.) and Bacon
kept the Buffs’ hopes alive. DeCamp then
flied out to center for the second out.
Facing their final out, Reed singled to load
the bases for Justin Sauceman (Alcoa,
Tenn.) who ended the game in dramatic
fashion with a walk-off grand slam for a
final score of 12-9.
Reed went 4-for-4 in the game with three
runs scored and was hit by a pitch, Bacon
was 2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs
scored, DeCamp was 2-for-4 with a walk, an
RBI and two runs scored, and Sauceman
finished the game 2-for-5 with five RBI and
two runs scored.
Derek Koone
(Winston-Salem, N.C.) picked up the win in
relief for the Buffaloes.
Game 2: Milligan 12 Berry 2 (5 innings)
The Buffs’ bats were alive in full force
again in game two, as they started early
with three runs in the bottom of the first
inning. Milligan collected five more runs in
the second frame that included four hits,
including a Ben Huff (Bristol, Tenn.)
homerun. After adding three more runs in the
fourth, the Buffs needed just one run in the
fifth inning to end the game by ten run
rule.
Reed had another solid game, going 2-for-2
and was hit by pitches twice to score three
runs. Saceman went 3-for-3 with two doubles,
two RBI and three runs scored, and Huff was
3-for-3 with two doubles, a homer and five
RBI.
Senior Stephen Jarrett (Gray, Tenn.)
threw the complete game, scattering seven
hits and allowing just two runs.
The Buffs will challenge AAC rival Va.
Intermont College to a doubleheader at 1
