MOUNT BERRY, GA (February 27, 2007)---Chris Cuzzourt
pitched a complete-game shutout as Berry downed
Milligan 5-0 in game one and then Nathan Freeman
hit a three-run home run in the second game, a
7-3 win. Berry improves to 13-2 on the season,
while Milligan falls to 4-8 on the year.
Cuzzourt threw a gem as he allowed just three
hits in the game while striking out three
Milligan batters. It was not only his first win
of the season.
In game one the Viking offense picked up by
great base running. The Vikings swiped four
bases in the first game including a pair by Ryan
Starr in the same inning.
Starr led off the Berry first inning with a
walk, then stole second and third base before
coming in on a sacrifice fly by Matt Thomas,
which gave Berry a 1-0 lead without the benefit
of a base hit. The Vikings nabbed a total of six
stolen bases over the two-game series.
Despite the great effort from Cuzzourt, the game
remained tight into the fifth inning. With
runners on first and second, Thomas smacked a
triple down the line in right field off of
starter JP Penland (Morristown, Tenn.)
that brought home a pair of runs to break the
game open. He would later score on a single by
Freeman. Thomas finished the game 1-for-2 with
three RBIs.
Offensively for the Buffs, Spencer Street
(Jonesborough, Tenn.) was 2-for-3, while
Brandon Murphy (Johnson City, Tenn.)
provided the only other hit for Milligan.
Penland went 5 1/3 innings in the loss, allowing
four earned runs from five hits.
In game two Freeman needed just one swing to
garner his three RBIs in the game. In the third
inning he jumped on a 1-0 pitch and sent it out
over the 380 sign in left-center field to bring
in three runs and give Berry a 7-0 lead in front
of pitcher Chris Rearick.
Berry, which has out-scored opponents 24-3 in
the first inning this year, posted four runs on
Milligan starter Todd Sangid (Johnson
City, Tenn.) to open up the game early. The
Vikings had three, consecutive RBI hits with two
outs in the inning to expand the lead to 4-0.
Starr was the only Berry player to record
multiple hits in the game going 2-for-3. Over
the series he was 2-for-4 with, three runs
scored and three stolen bases.
Street completed the double-header by going
1-for-2 with two runs scored and a walk in the
second game while Baker DeCamp (Miami,
Fla.) would go 2-for-3. Sangid suffered the loss
on the mound, he pitched 3 1/3 innings and
allowed seven runs.
Milligan will continue their Georgia trip
Wednesday with a doubleheader at Southern
Polytechnic State University. The first game of
the doubleheader is set to begin at 1 p.m. in
Marietta.
