Milligan's Wise throws two-hit shut out in AAC opener
Milligan drops semifinal contest 8-0 against TWC

BRISTOL, TN (May 3, 2006) --- The Milligan College Lady Buffs’ softball team, the fifth seed, opened the 2006 Appalachian Athletic Conference Softball Tournament with a 2-0 victory over Virginia Intermont College, the fourth seed Wednesday evening at Whitetop Creek Park in Bristol, Tenn.

Milligan advanced to play the AAC regular season champion, Tennessee Wesleyan College (23-15) in an AAC semifinal contest, and the Lady Bulldogs of TWC handed Milligan an 8-0 defeat. Tennessee Wesleyan opened the tournament with a similar 8-0 victory over eight seeded Union (Ky.) College in the first round.

With the opening day results, Milligan currently stands with an overall record of 17-22-1.

After the opening day, Milligan will have to wait to see who their opponent is. Milligan will play at 5 p.m., but first ninth seeded Bluefield (Va.) College (1-24) will play Montreat (N.C.) College (6-29), the seventh seed at 9 a.m. The winner between Bluefield and Montreat will advance to play the third seeded King (Tenn.) College (14-11) at 1 p.m. Milligan will then play the winner of the 1 p.m. elimination game at 5 p.m.

Tennessee Wesleyan will play AAC runner-up UVa.-Wise at 7 p.m. for the right to advance to the AAC Championship game.

AAC Quarterfinal
Milligan 2 Virginia Intermont 0 (19-26)

Milligan’s Jennifer Wise (Clermont, Fla.) shut out the Lady Cobras’ bats, as she threw a two hit shut out against rival Virginia Intermont. Wise mixed in four strikeouts in her seven innings of work.

The game was scoreless until Alicia Dick (Johnson City, Tenn.) drove in Leah Fritts (Knoxville, Tenn.) with a single in the fifth inning.

Milligan’s final run was in the form of a solo home run from Megan Aldridge (Johnson City, Tenn.) in the sixth inning.

The Lady Buffs’ bats only produced four hits, as Aldridge, Dick, Wise and Fritts reached with base hits.

Virginia Intermont’s only two hits were from Meghan Arnold and Erica Eno. Taking the loss, Cherith Hayden pitched a complete game, allowing two earned runs on four hits, with five strikeouts.

AAC Semifinals
Milligan 0 Tennessee Wesleyan 8

Tennessee Wesleyan sent the entire line-up and then some in the first inning. The Lady Bulldogs sent a total of 12 batters to the plate, and four runs were put on the board in the opening inning. TWC added two more runs in the third and fourth innings apiece to hold on for the 8-0 victory in five innings.

Wise, after picking up the shut-out victory against Virginia Intermont, she returned with another start on the mound against Tennessee Wesleyan and she gave up eight runs on seven hits in her 3 1/3 innings of work, in the losing effort for Milligan.

Tennessee Wesleyan’s Beth Williams pitched a one-hit shut out against Milligan, she struck out three in the five inning contest. Milligan’s lone hit was from senior Courtney Ruth (Kansas City, Kan.), which came in the fifth inning.

The Lady Bulldogs’ Ashleigh Malone was 2-for-3 with two runs scored with a triple and one RBI in the contest.
