MILLIGAN COLLEGE, TN (August 24, 2006) --- The Milligan
College Lady Buffs’ soccer team opened the 2006 season
at home Thursday evening, but No. 4 Carson-Newman
(Tenn.) College handed Milligan a 7-0 season opening
loss at Anglin Field.
Leslie Marcouiller started the scoring for the Lady
Eagles of Carson-Newman with a goal in the 20th
minute of the first half. After a goal from Andrea
Wolfrum in the 25th minute, Lindsey Farris
scored the first of her two goals in the match, coming
in the 34th minute. Carson-Newman took a 3-0
lead into halftime and added four more goals in the
second half.
Milligan’s sophomore goalkeeper,
Rosanna Couture
(Oakville, Ontario, Canada) recorded 21 saves in goal
for the Lady Buffs. Carson-Newman’s Melissa Terrell
accounted for three saves in seventy minutes of action.
Carson-Newman attempted 36 shots compared to Milligan’s
seven shots in the match.
“We
need to compete better and we will have no problems this
season,” Milligan head coach
Dave Dixon
said after the match, “we were able to do things right
at times tonight against a top-notch opponent in the
season opener.”
The
match was the season opener for both squads, as Milligan
starts 2006 with a 0-1 record while NCAA Division II
member Carson-Newman opens 1-0. Carson-Newman entered
the match and season ranked No. 4 in the National Soccer
Coaches Association of America/adidas National Rankings
after their Final Four appearance last season.
Milligan (0-1) will return to action next Wednesday,
August 30. The Lady Buffs will host Appalachian Athletic
Conference foe Bryan (Tenn.) College as both teams open
their AAC season. The match is scheduled to begin at 7
p.m. at Anglin Field.
