Townley puts Milligan past King 2-1

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, GA (November 5, 2004)--- The third seeded Milligan College Soccer team defeated second seed King (Tenn.) College 2-1 in an Appalachian Athletic Conference semifinal contest Friday afternoon to advance into the AAC Tournament Championship game to play AAC regular season champions Covenant (Ga.) College. With the win, Milligan improves to 13-6-1 on the season.

King jumped out to a 1-0 halftime lead only to see the Buffaloes bounce back behind senior Steven Townley (Adelaide, Australia). Townley scored two second half goals with both assist from AAC Player of the Year senior Ali Mohamed (Nairobi, Kenya).

Townley earned the Golden Boot award in the AAC with his nine goals during the regular season and with his two in this match, he raises his season total to 11.

“I am happy with the win,” said Milligan head coach Marty Shirley, “Jordan Fode (goalkeeper) had a big game for us and we look forward to playing Covenant for the championship.”

The Buffaloes will play the AAC regular season champions Covenant Saturday morning as the tournament championship game begins at 11:30 a.m. Milligan also qualified for the NAIA Region XII tournament that begins Tuesday November 9.

Milligan received a team award at the AAC Banquet; the Buffaloes were named the Champion of Character team in the conference for the 2004 season.

“This is a special team goal we have had this season,” said Shirley, referring to the Champions of Character award.
