The community will have the opportunity to view the art, photography and digital media pieces of Milligan College students at Art from the Buffalo School, an exhibit at Nelson Fine Art. The opening reception is part of Johnson City's First Friday event. The exhibit will be on display through February 29.

I am He, an exhibit by Milligan College senior Stephen Feryus, opens Sunday, February 5, from 2-4 p.m. in the Milligan Art Gallery, located in the lower level of Derthick Hall. It will remain open from February 6-10.

He’s part artist, part speaker, and all passion — this is what gives the Rev. Eric Samuel Timm of No One Underground relevance in today’s landscape. Speaking, painting, and performing to thousands each year, he is sought after for his ability to present God’s truth in ways that are attractive to both the church and to people who aren’t in a current relationship with Christ.

Dr. Janet Faulk, assistant professor of education at Milligan, will present a lecture titled “Rethinking Classroom Environments: Connecting Learning to Elementary Classroom Design,” drawn from her recent book, A Room to Learn: Rethinking Classroom Environments (Gryphon House, 2011. The presentation will be helpful for both education majors and teachers already in the field.

The music department will hold auditions for freshmen or transfer students entering Milligan in fall 2012. Auditions are open to voice and all instruments, and scholarship awards are given for participation in music ensembles regardless of the intended major. Close to Home, a photography exhibit by Milligan College senior Daniel Jones, will be on display February 13-17, in the Milligan Art Gallery located in the lower level of Derthick Hall. The exhibit is a photographic study of family and childhood in East Tennessee. There will be an opening reception on Sunday, February 12, from 2-4 p.m. in the Art Gallery.

A photography exhibit by Milligan College senior Morgan Simmons will be on display February 20-24, in the Milligan Art Gallery located in the lower level of Derthick Hall. There will be an opening reception on Sunday, Feb. 19, from 2-4 p.m. in the Art Gallery. This senior exhibit includes a variety of black and white medium format work Simmons shot over the past four years at Milligan.

Milligan College theater students will perform a fun journey through Shakespeare’s plays with The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (abridged) [revised]. This senior project features Daniel Banks, Timothy Laurio, and Matthew Rees. It is stage managed by Danielle Moore and directed by Dr. Dennis Elkins, professor of the practice of theater and humanities at Milligan.

Milligan College's step team Stompede presents a repertoire of step, an art that originates from African-American culture. The event is a collaborative event between Stompede and One7, an organization that focuses on inner city youth and families. Some of the youth who participate with One7 will perform as a part of this event.

Eclectic Emma, a photography exhibit by Milligan College senior Emma Rees, will be on display February 27-March 2, in the Milligan Art Gallery located in the lower level of Derthick Hall. There will be an opening reception on Sunday, February 26, from 2-4 p.m. in the Art Gallery.

Milligan College presents the annual Henry and Emerald Webb Lecture Series featuring Gary Holloway, executive director of the World Convention. The World Convention builds fellowship and understanding among Christian churches, Churches of Christ, and Disciples of Christ congregations throughout the world. Holloway began working as executive director of the World Convention full time in August 2010 after completing his responsibilities as Ijams Professor of Spirituality at Lipscomb University in Nashville, Tenn. He also serves as the minister of Natchez Trace Church of Christ in Nashville.

Alpha Chi Faculty Lectures

Exposed, a photography exhibit by Milligan College senior Car Beth Quisenberry-Brackins, will be on display March 19-23, in the Milligan Art Gallery, located in the lower level of Derthick Hall. There will be an opening reception on Sunday, March 18, from 2- 4  p.m. in the Art Gallery. The exhibit is an intimate portrayal of the photographer’s life and relationships, as viewed from the outside through portraiture.

Daniel Dabney, a pastor in The Post college ministry at Southeast Christian Church (SECC) in Louisville, Kentucky, and Greg Allen, vision team leader at SECC, will lead chapel at Milligan.

The Quickening, a new play by Deborah DeGeorge Harbin, will have its premiere at Milligan in the McGlothlin-Street Theatre of the Gregory Center for the Liberal Arts. Tickets are $5. The senior photography exhibit by Kayla Hatcher will feature photographs of Haitian and Chinese orphans. The opening reception is March 25, and the exhibit will remain open through April 10.

The Milligan College music faculty will present a collaborative recital featuring a wide range of chamber ensembles and repertoire such as the Saint-Saens Clarinet Sonata, the Bach Concerto for Two Violins, Hymn of Trust by Amy Beach, and music from the film Ladies in Lavender. Performers will include Tom Crawford, Anne Elliott, Noah DeLong, Kellie Brown, Cheryl Fitzgerald, and Charlotte Anderson.

To kick off the spring concert season, the Milligan College Arts Council is pleased to present A Celtic Celebration. This unique event will feature Scottish fiddling champion Jane MacMorran and the East Tennessee State University Celtic Pride Band. In addition to an evening concert, Jane MacMorran will offer a Celtic fiddling workshop open to the public at 4:30 pm. Following an exciting concert, the public is invited to bring their instruments on stage for an old-fashioned jam session.

Implicit in the art of making music is collaboration. The voice students of Charlotte Anderson, Noah DeLong, and Rachel Ellison and the accompanying students of Anne Elliott invite you to a recital of solos, duets, trios, and quartets.

Milligan Orchestra Concert

The Milligan College Orchestra, directed by Dr. Kellie Brown, will conclude its season with a spring concert featuring a variety of works and composers including a Church Sonata for Organ and Strings by Mozart, October by Eric Whitacre, and Holst’s Moorside Suite. The highlight of the evening will be the cleverly written Coffee Cantata by J. S. Bach, the hilarious story of a young girl’s coffee addiction, to rival that of any modern-day Starbucks enthusiast. A full staging of this cantata with singers and orchestra will comprise the second half of the program with a coffee reception to follow. The featured soloists will include Noah DeLong, assistant professor of music, and Milligan students Lauren Holt and Tim Laurio.

A senior photography exhibit by Brennan Seth Tracy will be exhibited April 16-20, in the Milligan Art Gallery. An opening reception will be held Sunday, April 15, from 2-4 p.m. in the Art Gallery.

Come enjoy an afternoon of a cappella music with Heritage and Heard Mentality, Milligan's smaller vocal ensembles led by Noah DeLong and Charlotte Anderson. Both groups appear frequently throughout the semester at churches and events in the region, but they return to campus in April to present a spring concert in the beautiful McGlothlin-Street Theatre of the Gregory Center for Liberal Arts. The concert will include sacred favorites along with a diverse selection of secular pieces, including barbershop, vocal jazz, and more.

Milligan will recognize local leaders who have demonstrated servant leadership in their careers and community at the college’s annual Leaders in Christian Service program. The keynote speaker is Greg Marksberry of First Church of Christ in Burlington, Kentucky.

Small group jazz arrangements and improvisation will be the emphasis of two Milligan College jazz combos. The concert in Sub7, a venue much like a jazz club, will feature a variety of styles including swing, Latin, and rock. In addition, individual instrumental improvisations are the central focus from every individual within the two groups. Jazz combo night at Sub7 is always fun and exciting.

Let Go by Milligan College senior V. Kelsey Ellis is a series of drawings, paintings, and mixed media works that reflect the growth that can come from embracing inspiration and “letting go” of inhibitions. The exhibit will be open April 23-27. There will be an opening reception on Sunday, April 22, from 2-4 p.m. in the Art Gallery.

The Milligan Women’s Chorale, under the direction of Anne Brooks Elliott, will present its annual spring concert in the Mary B. Martin Auditorium of Seeger Memorial Chapel. The ladies’ ensemble will perform a variety of works including God Who Made the World by Joseph Martin, Jerusalem Luminosa by Abbie Betinis, The Poet Sings by Z. Randall Stroope, and My Love Has Gone by Robert Schumann. The program will also feature popular music, and English composer and arranger Bob Chilcott’s “A Little Jazz Mass.” The concert accompanist is Amanda Eversole along with guest instrumentalists. 

An annual theatrical treat takes the stage once again showcasing the talents of student directors and their equally talented casts. Make plans now to attend this year’s festivities. New plays are presented each evening of the festival.

In honor of the Smithsonian Institution’s designation of April as Jazz Appreciation Month, the Milligan College Jazz Ensemble, directed by Rick Simerly, will perform a spring concert. An enjoyable night of jazz featuring the ensemble and individual improvisations from ensemble members will highlight the evening. 

The year’s best short films by Milligan’s student filmmakers will be screened at the McGlothin-Street Theater in the Gregory Center for the Liberal Arts. The festival features a diverse group of films in a variety of genres and styles, often featuring student actors. The filmmakers will briefly field questions about their work after each screening.

Milligan's Concert Choir, under the direction of Noah DeLong, will present a spring concert in the Mary B. Martin Auditorium of Seeger Chapel. The Concert Choir is an auditioned mixed choir of 40 singers who represent a variety of majors and backgrounds. These students will join their voices to offer a diverse program, including spirituals, hymn arrangements, Renaissance pieces, love songs, and songs from around the world, all inspired by the theme of singing.
