Area of Scientific Learning
Superior training is what students interested in a career in the medical or technical field will find in Milligan's scientific learning area. Courses in this area acquaint students with the elements of biology, chemistry, and mathematics in our living environment. At Milligan, small classes and one-on-one personal attention from professors provide students with an excellent education and expanded future educational opportunities.
The biology major is designed for students planning a career in the biomedical sciences, education, research, or governmental services. Students are prepared to demonstrate proficiency in a broad spectrum of life science disciplines, while also learning to be critical thinkers who can successfully communicate scientific knowledge.
The chemistry major is designed for the student planning a career in industry, research, engineering, teaching, or the biological sciences. Critical thinking and communication skills, as well as skills in laboratory sciences and instrumental techniques, are stressed in all chemistry curricula to prepare you for future success in your desired career. As a chemistry major, you will have learning opportunities in the four major branches of chemistry: inorganic, organic, analytical, and physical. You may choose to design a research project for yourself or participate in an internship program at a local pharmaceutical manufacturer.
The mathematics major is designed for students interested in careers in mathematics, teaching, industry, and engineering. It prepares students for employment in government or industry, teaching at all grade levels (elementary, middle school, and secondary), or for graduate study in mathematics.
Our Graduates
Graduates of the scientific learning area have pursued graduate studies at institutions such as University of Tennessee Medical School, Indiana University Medical School, Kentucky School of Dentistry, Mercer University College of Pharmacy & Health Sciences, University of Tennessee Veterinary School, Georgia Tech, University of Texas, and University of Virginia.
Over the past few decades, talented Milligan students who met all of the acceptance criteria for medical school, including doing well on the MCAT, have entered and performed competitively at medical schools throughout the country. Our graduates are serving their communities as teachers, health professionals, and industrial specialists. Many have chosen either full-time or short-term service as medical missionaries.
