The music program at Milligan seeks to produce life-long learners and lovers of music, as well as accomplished performers and avid music consumers. Students can pursue music in a variety of degree programs or simply elect music courses to enrich their liberal arts education. Participating in music at Milligan also allows students and faculty to experience new levels of worship and service.
Performing Ensembles
The college’s various ensembles and music courses are open to all students, regardless of major, and include Brass Ensemble, Concert Choir, Heritage, Jazz Combo, Jazz Ensemble, Orchestra, Pep Band, String Quartet, and Women’s Chorale.
The Milligan College Concert Choir conducts annual tours throughout the United States, performing for churches, high schools, and conventions.
The Milligan College Jazz Ensemble has opened the Grove Park Inn Jazz Festival in Asheville, NC, along with the Ellis Marsalis Trio. The ensemble is devoted to performance of jazz and pop styles, with emphasis on ensemble playing, solo playing, and improvisation.
The Milligan College Orchestra collaborates frequently with area ensembles, including the Johnson City Civic Chorale and the Johnson City Symphony Orchestra. The Orchestra is a frequent champion of new works and has performed a number of world premiers, including Three Genres by John Grubb in 2001 and Genesis by internationally renowned composer Kenton Coe in 2006.
Graduates
Milligan music graduates teach at all levels of music education, serve in music ministry positions, conduct professional music organizations, teach studio music, and perform professionally. Graduates of the music area have pursued further music studies at institutions throughout the U.S.
