Milligan students honored at awards ceremony


MILLIGAN COLLEGE, Tenn. (April 28, 2016) —Milligan College’s Awards Convocation on Thursday, April 28, was a special day for many of the college’s undergraduate students who were honored for their accomplishments this past year. Nearly 90 awards and scholarships were announced by the faculty and administration during the annual ceremony.

Gabriel Rees of Redford, Michigan, received the year’s most distinguished honor, the Ivor Jones Outstanding Senior Award.

The Ivor Jones Outstanding Senior Award recipient is nominated by the faculty. The award is presented each year to a graduating senior who demonstrates outstanding performance in service to the college, potential for continuing the objectives of the college, academic excellence and participation in college life.

Rees also earned the Business Administration Award and was named among the Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges. He will graduate on Saturday, May 7, with a Bachelor of Arts in business administration and a minor in humanities.

Local students who received awards include:

In the area of biblical learning, Molly Kate Brannock of Greeneville earned the Fred and Esther Meding Honorary Award for Biblical Studies; while Michaela Miller of Limestone, Tennessee, received the Earl R. Stuckenbruck Award for Excellence in Greek.

In the area of business, Sara Lee of Johnson City, Tennessee, earned the Eugene P. Price Excellence in Business Studies Award; while the Richard Phillips Outstanding Legal Studies Student Scholarship was presented to Abby Morris of Milligan College, Tennessee.

In the computer science area, Anthony Capaforte of Johnson City was presented the Computer Science Award.

In education, Jaretta Campbell earned the Undergraduate Student Teaching Award (K-6); Mary Kate Ferguson received the Outstanding Student Scholarship Award in Education; and Marth Wells of Greeneville was presented the Delta Kappa Gamma Outstanding Teaching Award.

In the area of exercise science, Charlotte Bateman of Jefferson City, Tennessee, earned the Outstanding Student Scholarship for Exercise Science; Alexandria Fellers received the Exercise Science (PE) Award; and Andrew Simonsen of Johnson City was presented the Exercise Science (Pre-professional) Award.

In humane learning, Joshua Bullen of Johnson City earned the German Award; while Megan Fontenot of Jonesborough received the English Award.

In nursing, Heather Greene of Elizabethton received the Senior Nursing Award; while Kayla Wilson of Elizabethton earned the Outstanding Student Scholarship Award in Nursing.

In communications, Joshua Buckles of Bristol, Virginia, earned the Outstanding Digital Media Student Award; Amber Plumer of Elizabethton was presented the Outstanding Film Studies Student Award; and Caleb Perhne of Elizabethton received the Outstanding Student Scholarship Award in Communication.

In music, Laura Mixon of Kingsport received the Orchestra Award and Concert Choir Award; while Maverick Summie of Jonesborough earned the Outstanding Student Scholarship Award in Music.

In the scientific learning area, Kerri Beth Slaughter of Gray was presented the Biology Award and the Chemistry Award; while Grace Gemar of Johnson City received the Dick Lura Honorary Pre-Med Award and Outstanding Student Scholarship Award in Scientific Learning.

In the social learning area, Katelynn Millington of Kingsport earned the Sociology Award; while Hunter Shepard of Johnson City received the Political Science Award.

The Jeremy S. Duncan Memorial Scholarship was awarded to J.D. McDonald of Johnson City.

The Dennis Bratton Servant Leadership Award was presented to Anne Varghese of Kingsport.

Fontenot received the Outstanding Undergraduate Research Project.

Other local students who were named to Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges included the following: Brannock; Mixon; Joshua Ramsaran of Johnson City; Casey Richardson of Kingsport; Katherine Siglin of Kingsport; Andrew Simonsen of Johnson City; Slaughter; and John Steadman of Johnson City.
