Two Beloved Milligan Families and One Incredible Legacy
The Greenwell-Aldridge connection and friendship dates back to the 1940’s in the Lamar community of Washington County, TN. Dennis Greenwell and Duard Aldridge’s friendship probably began on the basketball court or baseball field at Lamar School.
After high school, both Dennis and Duard decided to attend what was then Milligan College in the fall of 1953 and play basketball and baseball for legendary Coach Duard Walker, who just happened to be Duard Aldridge’s future brother-in-law. While excelling in both sports at Milligan, the two of them met the women who would become their wives, Lois Ferrell (Greenwell) and Patricia Roberts (Aldridge) and the families’ legacy with Milligan began.
After graduating from Milligan, Dennis and Duard began their coaching and teaching careers together in Carter County and later moved their families to Johnson City, where each taught and coached at Science Hill High School.
Dennis and Lois had three children, Brian, Brenda, and Kevin. Duard and Pat had two children, Jeff and Melanie. There are quite a few Milligan alumni from these two families. In addition to Dennis, Lois, Duard, and Pat, many of their children and grandchildren have attended Milligan. Jeff Aldridge graduated in 1983 and played baseball for the Buffs, and his wife, Tembra Chaplain Aldridge, whom he met at Milligan, graduated in 1981. She happened to be on the very first women’s track team and played basketball. Brian’s daughter, Jennifer Greenwell, graduated in 2005 and was on the dance team. She later worked in admissions for Milligan and coached the dance team. Jeff and Tembra’s daughter, Nyela Aldridge Edwards, graduated in 2006 with a nursing degree. Their second daughter, Megan Aldridge Harmon, graduated in 2007 and played softball at Milligan. She still holds the “Single Season Homerun” record, was the “All-Time Career Homerun” record holder until two years ago, and is a member of the university’s Athletics Hall of Fame. Megan met and married Tyler “Goose” Harmon, who played basketball for the university. We feel certain the Greenwell-Aldridge connection with Milligan University will continue with the next generation (great-grandchildren) in a few years.
Because of our families’ love of athletics, we began the annual Greenwell-Aldridge Golf Classic when Dennis Greenwell passed away in 1994 and then Duard Aldridge passed away in 1996. The annual tournament has raised more than $450,000 over the last 28 years to help the athletics program at Milligan. It has and is a great way for local businesses, alumni, and friends to support Milligan’s exceptional athletics program.
